Press Release – 18th April 2025

Feasibility Study Progress.

News of the appointment of Turner & Townsend to carry out the feasibility study on extending the Borders Railway came out just too late to be included in The Hawick Paper last week. But today’s edition (18 April, page 5) reports on this news in more detail, with statements from Councillor Watson McAteer, Convener of Scottish Borders Council, and from Marion Short, Chair of Campaign for Borders Rail.

Cllr McAteer notes that Turner & Townsend have appointed a senior project manager and support team who have extensive experience in managing conplex railway-related projects, and he urges members of the public to ‘get behind’ convincing the Scottish and UK governments to complete the railway.

Marion Short says that the next edition of Campaign for Borders Rail’s newsletter is due for imminent release, and the front page article by the Campaign’s technical adviser Peter Heubeck explains in far greater detail about the feasibility study and the new appointment. CBR’s newsletter is circulated only to members of the Campaign, and now is a good time to join us or renew your membership of it’s lapsed. Membership starts from £10 a year. Notes for editors:

The Campaign for Borders Rail is a long-established pressure group promoting the benefits of modern train services for communities across the Borderlands. Our grassroots campaign saw the rail link from Edinburgh to the Scottish Borders reopened. Now we’re lobbying to extend the popular Borders Railway onward to Hawick and Carlisle. Visit the Campaign website for further details.
